Classroom Behavior

Discipline Chart

Our class has our discipline chart displayed. This visual aid helps remind the children of the consequences of their behavioral choices. As much as I try to focus on positive reinforcements, sometimes, it is necessary to give children a consequence for misbehavior. I try my best to make the consequences logical. For example, If a child is playing during work time, I will make them do work during playtime.

In our classroom, we keep track of behavior with the following color-coded system. It is an easy, visual way for children to monitor their behavior and a quick way to let you know how they are doing.

Super Star- Way to go!

The children begin each day with their name on the “Super Star” level of the chart. This means they are displaying behavior that is above my expectations of them.

Green- Great Day!

If the children make good behavioral choices but need a reminder of a classroom expectation they will have to move their clip down to green. There is no consequence as the students are just providing themselves with a visual reminder of a warning. Being on green is my expectation of every student.

Yellow- OOPS!

This is your warning don't do it again! If a child has difficulty following our classroom rules or directions, they will first be given a verbal reminder about correct behavior. He/she will be asked to sit out for a short period to cool down and think about what he/she can do better.

Orange/Red- Not Your Best Day!

Students that have to move their clip down to orange, and eventually red will receive an immediate response (teacher conference, thinking chair, etc.) Students will have a consequence during based on the level of discipline they are on. If the child has to move to red, the student will have additional time-out and receive a classroom referral. In cases when student behavior causes physical harm to themselves or others, or in other extreme circumstances, students may receive a discipline referral and have to meet with an administrator or school counselor. Parents will be notified if student receives a referral.

Support from home is absolutely essential to make this behavior system work. Your child will receive a stamp in their folder at the end of the day to indicate that they made right choices at school. Please make sure to praise your child when he/she is consistently behaving well in class and set up appropriate consequences when he/she is not. By working together, we can create a wonderful atmosphere in which all children can learn!
